Say Hello to Martin
Name: Martin
Birthday: Unknown, but we celebrate it on February 11th, 2005
Status: HIV-, Cerebral Palsy
Meet Martin. On a routine visit to the hospital with Estania, we noticed a little disabled boy in one of the hospital cribs. The boy had been left to fend for himself, he had no identification and his birthday is a mystery. When we found him, he had been in the hospital for a few days and had been severely neglected. His diapers were soiled and he was covered in lice. We were under the impression that no one had taken any notice of this little boy in a few days. We were left with no choice but to bring the little boy home. and in honor of the founder of WeCanBuildanOrphanage we named the boy Martin.
Once at the orphanage, Martin was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy by our pediatrician. He appeared to be unresponsive to touch, noise and other senses but with love, care and attention he has shown world’s of improvement. We were very fortunate to have found a wonderful physical therapist named Chery who worked with Martin so he could regain his strength and learn to move his limbs. Cheri also worked with our nannies so that when she was unable to be with Martin he would still receive the care and attention he needed.
Unfortunately Martin developed a habit of hitting his head against the ground and a big bump began to form on his forehead. Fortunately in April 2009 a wonderful group of people at a company called Matchcraft, joined together to buy him a soft helmet. It was a wonderful gift that has allowed Martin to avoid quite a bit of pain, and he loves his helmet! Today Martin responds to noise, he can sit up on his own, and loves to be tickled and bounced.
