This week I would like to introduce you to two brothers living at the orphanage, Sylvaince and Yakime. While we were in the hospital caring for Sophie we noticed a boy with his grandmother.
The boy and is grandmother had come to the hospital from Marbial in the mountains just north of Jacmel. The little boy was suffering from sever malnutrition and a condition called Kwashiorkor (symptoms include distended bellies, skin and hair delimitation, edema, and hair loss). The little Boy’s name was Sylvaince. His grandmother was unable to pay for any of his medications nor could she afford to feed him. Luke, or former director, helped pay for the things she needed to help treat Sylvaince. He informed her that if she was unable to care for Sylvaice in the future, we would help her out.
On December 7th Sylvaince’s grandmother came to us and asked if we could care for Sylvaince as she was to old to properly care for him. About a month later His older brother Yakime joined him. At the time of the boys arrival their grandmother told us that the boys mother had passed away and that their father had never been around. Later we found out that their mother was still alive and living outside the country.
Today the boys are very well fed. Sylvaince no longer has any signs of malnutrition. He is quiet a happy boy who loves to play with toy cars. Yakime has also become accustomed to life at the orphanage and is happy and healthy. Yakime and his friend Lukeson run around like 2 little monkeys climbing up on anything and everything they can. We are happy to have two brothers able to grow up together under our care.
