Meet Sophie
Wed, Jun 10, 2009
Name: Sophie Valentine Montgomery
In our care since: October 22, 2007
Birthday: October 22, 2007
Status: HIV- (HIV positive at birth, 1 month prematurely born
Today HIV negative)
We found Sophie on October 22nd 2007 at Hopital St Michel, she was the fourth child to come live with us. Sophie was a very small baby who had been abandoned on the steps the hospital, of course we had no choice but to help this precious child.
Sophie in the Hospital
The doctors assessed that Sophie had been born earlier that day, she had been born one month premature. For her first 2 weeks Sophie stayed in the hospital in an incubator, was placed on oxygen, and she had to be administered IV fluids. Even though we had taken full responsibility for her from day one, it took us five weeks to legally have Sophie placed in our care. On November 29th 2007 the Director of the hospital and officials at the Mayor of Jacmel’s office finally signed the paperwork for Sophie to official come live with us.
When Sophie first came into our care, she tested positive for HIV, as you might expect we were devastated. We did some research and found out that babies need to be tested every three months for the first 18 months of their lives. When performing an HIV test you are testing for antibodies and with children under the age of 18 months it is possible that they are still carry their mother’s antibodies for HIV which would produce a false positive.
On April 28th 2009 we received great news, Sophie tested negative for HIV! It was official, she was in the clear!!!
Sophie is a very happy girl, although she went through a small shy phase she now smiles and opens up to everyone. Sophie is extremely smart and started to walk at one year old. She has big doe eyes and a beautiful smile. The staff loves her and Frantz (our manager), calls her his side kick.

Hi Lea,
What a great job you are doing. You will have a special place in heaven. Sophie is such a beautiful child. She is born in October,if she is a Libra as I am, watch out for her artistic side. I also remimber
Youseline, look how her face had cleared up now. She is a very friendly little girl though.
What a tragedy for Haiti. I am in the US, I feel traumatized, what about the people who live through the seism?. Those children, who were in the park with you ,will need some mental help.
