Silent Auction

We can’t wait to see you all!!! And you can still purchase tickets on the Oktoberfest page, or you can but them at the door.

We don’t want to give everything away, but we also thought it would be a good time to tell you about one of our contests. We need an official name for our orphanage, and we want your help. Start thinking of the best names you can and either post your ideas in the comments section of this blog by Sunday morning, or you can enter a name for our orphanage at the Festival. We will announce the winner on Sunday. There will be a price, and you can enter as many times as you want.

Tickets are on sale for our Oktober Family Festival and are limited, so get them while you can! You can order tickets on the left at www.90290.org (but our system only allows you to purchase one ticket at a time, sorry) or pick your tickets up in Topanga at Waterlily, Mimosa, and the Saturday Abundant Harvest pickup, we can’t wait to see you:)

Unfortunately the Polsky Family Band had a scheduling conflict and will not be able to play at the Oktober Family Fest after all. Although we are sad that they will not be able to play we have found an awesome replacement! The Muddy Reds!

The Muddy Reds bring a sound steeped in roots, blues, and swamp music (I luv swamp music) that is hard to define unless you’ve heard it for yourself. If you want a sneak peak click here.

“It’s a sweltering summer day…you’re cruising down a dirt road in an old pickup, windows down, switching between a Creedence 8-track and Motown’s Greatest Hits, when suddenly the sky turns red and you realize you’ve been on Mars.” Nothing makes these five guys happier than copping a bad jam and giving people an excuse to dance their hearts away.

As you may know by now WeCanBuildanOrphanage.com is hosting their first annual Oktober Family Fest, October 18^th, and we thought this would be a good time to introduce you to some of our musical acts. Fist off, Meet the Polsky Band! This amazing local family loves to get everyone in the mood for dancing with their old time bluegrass and fiddle music.

Next up is Peter Alsop who we all had the pleasure of meeting in last week’s blog.

Then you can rock out to Rick Ellis. This Topanga local has toured all over the world with his band. Get ready to for some great blues and classic rock, know one can resist Rick Ellis!

We can’t stop there, meet the boys in Philip Boon’s Band. We have Angelo the Banjelo on you guessed it…the banj. Charlie Hale rocks the piano, Steven smith on bass, Scott Izumida on drums, and of course Philip Boone in the flesh. This wonderful Folk Rock band will have you spinning around the dace floor. Be sure to Scott’s “mad skill,” he has also donated drum lessons in our silent auction!

Last but definitely not least, meet Tyson Kelly, Dylan Corin, Jake Shearer, and George Krikes the boys of King Washington! “Saturated in complex harmonies and intelligent chord progressions alike, the music of King Washington is a throwback to when rock n’ roll was a songwriter’s game. The Los Angeles-based band, heavily endowed with musicality, is promptly seizing opportunities and capturing the attention of music lovers at a startling rate.”

On August 7^th of this month we had the exciting opportunity of being the featured non-profit at the Topanga Film Festivals Friday night screening at “Trust Ranch” (the founder of WeCanBuildanOrphanage.com house). Not only did Urs and Sara, the founders of the Topanaga Film Festival Feature us, but their kids dressed up and sold candy with information about WeCanBuildanOrphanage.com on it. They were the best volunteers ever!

We gave a quick talk about the Orphanage during the beautiful night. The film “What About Me?” in collaboration with Project Butterfly was awesome. The film was shown in the same place where our October Family Fest will be held, so it was great to see how the Film Festival set up for their event, and what a success it was.

In the end they help raise $287 for our kids in Haiti. That means there uniforms and school supplies are paid for!!! We are sooooo excited! Thanks Topanga Film Fest, can’t wait for next year.

As id that was not generous enough from our new friends at All Green Things, they also donated another basket!! This lovely Basket is filled with everything green you need for school! Inside you will find notepads and folders made of recycled paper, a cloth lunch bag, bamboo utensils, reusable food containers, and more!

We can’t wait to see what we will arrive next for our silent auction. Thank you again to all of you who are making this event possible.

On Tuesday we met up with Dan, our graphic designer, to start brain storming on a cool logo for the event, keep your eye’s pealed for that. He also spoke with Organic Pastures and they are going to set up a raw milk and Kombucha tasting tent more treats, yum yum

Jimmy Jean-louis, Jeannette, Won-g

It was quite an event complete with raper artist Won-g, another Haiti native. It was wonderful to see everyone show their support and ideas for the future of Haiti and I am so glad that the WeCanBuildanOrphanage.com team was able to attend.

On October 18th, 2009  we will be hosting our event on a beautiful ranch up in the hills of Topanga Canyon.  We are going to have a day filled with music, good food and a lot fun.  Stay tuned every Monday for updates on the planning of the event.

We would like to give you a little insight into who and what will be at the event and thank a few vendors who have offered to help us out.

All Green Things is making not only one but two baskets filled with Eco-friendly products for our raffle. It ain’t easy being green.

Soon you will be able to get a sneak peak at our flyers and posters. Dan Erwin of Sierfert/Irwin, Inc. is a graphic designer who has offered to do some super cool designing for us, so stay tuned.

Frey Vineyards

As we are in California no event would be complete without a little wine, and Frey’s Vineyards is helping to make that possible by donating 2 cases of their organic wine for the beverage stand.

Don’t worry we haven’t forgotten the kids, we are an orphanage after all. Topanaga’s very own, Karen Simer will be attending complete with a petting zoo for the kids.
