Adventures in Haiti Part 4

Kids

We were finally getting settled into Haiti today and we had quite a few meetings to get through. We started with Art Creation Foundation and it was awesome to see what the kids were doing. I would equate it to a Boys and Girls Club in the US. They do not go to school there but they eat and have a creative outlet, the work born from this opportunity is awesome. It was quite an inspiring place to see.

Later we went back to the orphanage to give the kids a few presents and lunch. Then it was off to KROMA, another children’s organization in town. We planned to go to a nice beach after but we stopped to visit one of our kids sister’s and it turned into quite an event.

Kroma

Estania’s sister is 27 and she is doing very well for a young Haitian woman. She has a little store and a garden, and was so grateful to us for taking care of her sister that she flourished us with gifts. She first gave all of the kids and us cookies, then she gave us an entire plantain bunch off of one of her trees. As if that were not enough she gave us fresh coconuts from her tree. We watched a man climb to the top of what must have been a 60 foot tree and gave us a coconut right then and there. It was awesome, we drank the water then ate the fruit, mmmmm. Next came the key limes. It was truly over whelming. They are so poor but so giving.

Estania's Sister

When we were about to leave Estania’s sister asked if we would be willing to go visit her grandmother. Of course we said sure and off we went down the street. We parked the car then proceeded to hike over the river, and through the woods to her grandmothers house. Her grandmother had not seen Estania in 2 years and was so happy to see all of us. They also gave us all sorts of things for the orphanage. Huge avocados, carrots, a different type of plantain, this small tree fruit called “qunept,” and a type of orange they use to cook meat with. It was so much fun! They do not see white people very much so we were something different. All the girls wanted to braid my hair, so off they went. After about 20min of hair braiding and a new hairdo we were off again back to the orphanage and winding up our day. But it was a fun day for sure!

HELP CHILDREN IN HAITI

Meet Martin

MartinMeet Little Martin. On a routine visit to a hospital we noticed a little disabled boy in one of the hospital cribs. The boy had been left to fend for himself, he had no identification and his birthday is a mystery. He had been in the hospital for a few days and had been severely neglected: his diapers were soiled and he was covered in lice. No one had taken any notice of this little boy in a few days and we were left with no choice but to bring the little boy home. In honor of one the Kay Angel founders we named the boy “Little” Martin.
