Lia recently hired a Boss (this is what they call a carpenter/repair-man in Haiti) named Frito for some repairs around the orphanage. While she had access to Frito she decided to see if she could strike a deal with him to build a true school bench for the triplets. They have been working so hard since their new school uniforms that we thought it was time they had a true school bench to attend school in.

After school last week Lia let the triplets go down the street by themselves to visit Eliane, our nanny and her new baby while the girls were still in their school uniforms. We decided it was time to experiment with the girls going a short distance on their own.

Eliane lives just down the street 2 blocks over to the left of the orphanage, and the girls are getting to the age that they should be able to walk a short distance like that on their own. This is very common for other Haitian kids their age.
Since the beginning of this new school-year our triplets have been begging Lia to find a school for them to attend outside the orphanage. The reason they want to attend school outside the orphanage this year in particular, is 4 of our other kids are in school outside and they get to wear a school-uniform. Given that the triplets are all HIV+ no school will accept them. This in combination with how behind they are in school, because they never attended school before they came to live with us, makes it a necessity for them to stay in school at the orphanage.

This Sunday the 18th, is Oktober Family Fest to benefit the Schmitt Family orphanage, and we thought we would give you a sneak peak of our cool festival logo! We are so excited that we just can’t wait to show you! One of our amazing volunteers Dana created this logo for us and we know you will love it as much as we do!

Friday was an early start, and was non stop! The first thing we did was head out to the orphanage to watch the triplets during their in-house school for a bit. It was wonderful to see what a positive experience school is for them. When the school day was finished for the girls they decided to sing a song for us, what a treat!
Last week Lia took Estania to Port-au-Prince to have an x-ray of her thorax, and meet with Dr. Pilie, the cardiologist. Because Estania was already scheduled for an appointment with Dr. Pilie to look at her heart, we decided to also ask for his medical opinion on her upcoming ear operation with Dr. Monsanto, in Jacmel. Dr Monsanto needs several tests before he can schedule the operation, including an x-ray of her thorax, and the opinion of a cardiologist in order to choose the right type of anesthetics for her. Estania’s surgery requires full anesthesia, and with heart problems it is important to check.
Unfortunately the Polsky Family Band had a scheduling conflict and will not be able to play at the Oktober Family Fest after all. Although we are sad that they will not be able to play we have found an awesome replacement! The Muddy Reds!

The Muddy Reds bring a sound steeped in roots, blues, and swamp music (I luv swamp music) that is hard to define unless you’ve heard it for yourself. If you want a sneak peak click here.
Wednesday morning we had the pleasure of meeting with a man named Jonas, the Haiti representative for Hollywood Unites for Haiti, Jimmy Jean-louis’ new Haiti program. He was such a nice man. Not only did he take the time to meet with us, but he also arranged for us to visit Father Rick’s organization called “Our Little Brothers and Sisters,” in Tabarre. This place was an amazing compound. They have a Hospital and special ed school, plus they have another facility off site with an orphanage. It was clean and well built, and by Haitian standards it is extremely nice. After our visit with Phadoul, the hospital director we were off to Jacmel.
